Patriots Set to Cut Ties With Controversial $83 Million Ex-Pro Bowler: ‘Formality’
Jackson is almost a lock to be released by the Patriots this season after a contentious season in which the Chargers virtually threw him away in the trade to New England and the Patriots banned him for breaking curfew.
Brad Spielberger of PFF tweeted this about the Patriots removing Jackson: this move will free them $14.4 million in salary room and increase their overall salary cap space to almost $90 million.
“After the Patriots acquired Jackson’s contract from the Los Angeles Chargers, with the 2023 salary nearly cut to the minimum, this is merely a formality as the salaries have since skyrocketed once again.” Even after his comeback to New England, Jackson had one of the lowest grades in the entire NFL, and Christian Gonzalez’s 2024 return should provide the Patriots their new lockdown cornerback of the future.
In 2018, Jackson became an undrafted free agent and began his career with the Patriots.
Jackson courted controversy all season long, and in Week 9, the Patriots benched him for the most part when he failed to report for curfew at the team hotel. The next week, the Patriots did not send him to Germany for the Colts game; instead, they held him out.
Jackson was listed as available for the Patriots’ Week 15 matchup with Kansas City, but he did not show up. He ended the season on injured reserve unrelated to football.
