In order to accommodate for the coaching transition, the NCAA’s transfer portal was reopened to players and signees when Jim Harbaugh, the previous head coach of the Michigan football team, left for the Los Angeles Chargers. On January 26, Sherrone Moore was brought in to take over for Harbaugh. In the following weeks, Moore has dedicated his efforts to both staff assembling and roster stability.
And the mission was largely successful. With just defensive tackle Reece Atteberry and defensive back Keon Sabb leaving the team, the Wolverines’ portal is closed as of Saturday, February 24. While Sabb, who was expected to start in three safety looks, is headed to Alabama, Atteberry’s destiny is still unknown.
Not only did players choose to stay after the add/drop deadline for Michigan’s classes passed, but it also provided some cushion going into spring football. When spring practices come to an end at Ann Arbour on April 20, the portal will reopen from April 15–30. There could be a more sensible area to keep an eye out for any future programme additions or deletions.
