Unai Emery has led his Villa charges to fourth with 11 games left of this Premier League season, five points ahead of the nearest challengers, Tottenham Hotspur. The publication of Villa’s financial results for the 2022/23 accounting period earlier this week caused some consternation among supporters given the £119.6m loss that had been posted, largely borne from increased investment into the playing staff.

PSR allows for £105m of losses over a three-year period, but clubs can deduct losses attributable to investment in infrastructure, the women’s team, the academy, and the community. Villa were PSR compliant for 2022/23, with deductions also including the impact of Covid, still accounted for in the three-year monitoring period.

The club have stated they remain compliant with PSR, and expect to be again when the Premier League asks to assess the current 2023/24 period in December. There are things moving in the right direction for Villa, including revenue. But the 2024/25 accounting period, which will begin at the start of July this year after Villa opted to change the financial year, making the current period 13 months, will be a rosier picture if Villa continues on its current trajectory.
