On March 11, 1929, Earl Smith—the school record holder in the broad jump, the captain of the ’28 football team, and a standout player on the basketball team—announced his plan to play baseball in an attempt to become a four-sport letterman. Paradoxically, the native of Haleyville originally travelled to Alabama to play baseball. He didn’t participate in high school football. – Bryant Museum
