Free-Falling Sox

The Red Sox have hit the skids over the past week and their most recent slump began with last week’s four-game home set against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox lost three of four to the Rays to close out their homestand and followed that up by losing two of three games to the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Red Sox won their second straight in the opener led by seven shutout innings from starter Tanner Houck and Rafael Devers’ home run, breaking a Red Sox team record by homering in his sixth consecutive game. On Tuesday night, the Red Sox ensured a series win at the Trop for the first time since 2019 with a 5-2 win. Jarren Duran homered and also stole home to lead the Sox to the win.

The Red Sox will send young right-hander Brayan Bello to the hill in the series finale against the Rays on Wednesday night. Bello is 4-2 in seven starts this season with just one quality start thus far. Bello has an ERA of 3.96 this season and a WHIP of 1.13. Bello has allowed 32 hits in 36.1 innings pitched including eight home runs. Bello has walked nine batters and struck out 31 in his seven starts. Bello is 2-1 in four road starts this season with an ERA of 4.79. He has allowed 18 hits in 20.2 innings pitched and given up six home runs in those four starts. The Red Sox have gone 3-2 in Bello’s last five starts.
